A layered coming-of-age story from the creative team behind I Want to Eat Your Pancreas--and don't miss the original novel, also available from Seven Seas。

An unhappy girl who engages in self-harm, a high schooler ostracized by her classmates, and an old woman looking to live out her twilight years in peace–what could three such different people have in common? That’s what grade schooler Nanoka Koyanagi is trying to find out。 Assigned by her teacher to define what “happiness” means to her, Nanoka tries to find her place in the world by exploring her relationships with these three strangers, and through them, comes to know herself。

Was she really just hallucinating? Where they all like the Sam person just different ages? It kinda made me stress。 I really really wish they hadn’t put that bit in there。 If it wasn’t then I pull have absolutely loved this book。 It was heartfelt。 And had a good message so whatever。

a bit confusing until the last 10 pages (lmao) but overall beautiful and offers a great insight on life!! This book is a soft place for your heart to rest and restore。 It’s got just the right combination of complexity and simplicity—sweet without being saccharine, hopeful without being oblivious。

It was pretty easy to guess what the plot "twist" was。 And very early on too。 It was all too pretty predictable。 There are also some things never quite explained。 Though I guess those don't really matter in the grand scheme of things。 Really the story isn't anything special? The strength of the manga is with its message。 And it's a message that everyone needs to hear at least once in their life。 And keep to reminding themselves。 I admit I got teary。 This manga did hit me where I am vulnerable。 B It was pretty easy to guess what the plot "twist" was。 And very early on too。 It was all too pretty predictable。 There are also some things never quite explained。 Though I guess those don't really matter in the grand scheme of things。 Really the story isn't anything special? I thought this manga was a solid 3/5 until I met the plot twist。 Suddenly, this weird and melancholy story became brilliant and insightful and even weirder。 I cannot say much about this book without spoiling the entire thing, so I think it would be best if you go in blind and with the understanding that you must finish it to get the pay off that it has。

I absolutely loved this。。。everything about this。 The story, the art, the thoughts and the feelings。。。so wonderful。 What is happiness? I love how this book answers that question。 Definitely worth a read。。。this is one of my new favorites and I will definitely be thinking about this one for a while。

References to Tom Sawyer, Peanuts, and Kiki's Delivery Service。 How could I not love this book。 This manga touched me as deeply as the animes "Your Name" and "A Silent Voice"。This little girl visits her friends every day after school and each one teaches her a little bit more about herself。 The twist is heartwarming and it took me a little too long to put it all together I will admit。 I typically read manga when I have book hangovers and struggle to commit to a new novel or series。 However for t References to Tom Sawyer, Peanuts, and Kiki's Delivery Service。 How could I not love this book。 This manga touched me as deeply as the animes "Your Name" and "A Silent Voice"。This little girl visits her friends every day after school and each one teaches her a little bit more about herself。 The twist is heartwarming and it took me a little too long to put it all together I will admit。 I typically read manga when I have book hangovers and struggle to commit to a new novel or series。 However for the first time I have found a manga that has done the same。 This one hit all the high points。 It was an easy read but it covered difficult topics of self harm and addiction。 And somehow at the end we get a happy ending that ties everything up into a neat little bow。 I love it! 。。。more

Nanoka on 4-luokkalainen tyttö, joka ei oikein osaa ystävystyä oman ikäistensä kanssa vaan viettää mieluummin aikaa aikuisten seurassa。 Kun Nanoka saa koulussa tehtäväksi selvittää, mitä on onnellisuus, päätyy hän pohtimaan omaa elämäänsä ja lähellään olevien ihmisten elämää。Kaunis ja sopivan mystinen tarina, joka olisi saanut olla hieman pidempikin。 Hätiköityä loppua lukuun ottamatta varsin onnistunut teos。

Yoru Sumino is quickly becoming a new favourite for me。 This story follows a young girl whose latest class assignment is to discover what happiness means。 In trying to figure out her own definition, she talks to her friends and tries to discover what makes them happy。 It deals with self-harm in a way that I have never read before, and readers who are sensitive to self-harm, or conversations around suicide should read with caution。 A truly beautiful story about how we can make our own happiness a Yoru Sumino is quickly becoming a new favourite for me。 This story follows a young girl whose latest class assignment is to discover what happiness means。 In trying to figure out her own definition, she talks to her friends and tries to discover what makes them happy。 It deals with self-harm in a way that I have never read before, and readers who are sensitive to self-harm, or conversations around suicide should read with caution。 A truly beautiful story about how we can make our own happiness and how we can help others find theirs。 。。。more

Damn, Yoru Sumino has done it again, making me feel things I didn't now I had。 This was such a lovely read & a beautiful story。 For me this is the best manga I've read so far (although that might not mean that much, since I haven't read that much manga yet so perhaps take this with a grain of salt? :s) It's a very simple story about a young child looking for the answer to: "What is happiness?" She can't seem to find the answer on her own (view spoiler)[ (or does she? hehehe ^-^) (hide spoiler)] Damn, Yoru Sumino has done it again, making me feel things I didn't now I had。 This was such a lovely read & a beautiful story。 For me this is the best manga I've read so far (although that might not mean that much, since I haven't read that much manga yet so perhaps take this with a grain of salt? :s) It's a very simple story about a young child looking for the answer to: "What is happiness?" She can't seem to find the answer on her own (view spoiler)[ (or does she? hehehe ^-^) (hide spoiler)] & goes to ask different (older) people, her friends。 It was such a fun read, that made me emotional at times。 I binged it so quickly & couldn't stop thinking about it after finishing it。 I had that emotional drained feeling after finishing it (which is a good thing, a book that can make me feel things is all I can ask for)。 This manga is unfortunately not that popular (even tho it totally deserves to be lol), so I couldn't find many other people talking about it & sharing their thoughts about it。 I did see some reviews saying (view spoiler)[ that they saw the twist coming but that it didn't ruin the book for them。 However my stupid ass didn't see the twist coming at all。 I only understood what was going on until the second to last chapter! But I'm also the person that didn't see the twist coming in "I want to eat your pancreas" by Yoru Sumino & that one was even more obvious so yea :s (hide spoiler)] I'm so glad I decided to read this, even tho it's meant for young adults, I still learned some things from this。 But most importantly it made me start thinking as well。 What does happiness mean to me? I think that's going to be a question I won't be able to answer right now since I'm going to have to do a lot of thinking & reflecting on it to find out what truly makes me happy。 Yes, a manga did that, damn。 This books is also my first 5 star read of the year, Yoru Sumino thank u for this beautiful story & experience! (Also the artwork is amazing! So so so incredibly beautiful, Idumi Kirihara did an amazing job illustrating this masterpiece!) I'm definitely going to pick up more manga's & novels by this author。 As I said before this book is targeted for young adults, but I'd recommend this book to anyone, a truly wonderful experience! 。。。more

I did like this series overall。 However I did find it to be a bit predictable and sadly I figured out the twist toward the beginning。

My nose is literally killing me because this manga guys, really pulls your heartstrings all over the place。 It’s basically about a little girl who befriends with different individuals such as an elderly woman, a nice young girl (possibly in her late 20s early 30’s maybe?), a schoolgirl who nearly * trigger warning* harmed herself and a classmate who is being bullied for his love of art。 The little girl has to find out “What is Happiness?” and to be honest personally, it’s a 50/50 question cause My nose is literally killing me because this manga guys, really pulls your heartstrings all over the place。 It’s basically about a little girl who befriends with different individuals such as an elderly woman, a nice young girl (possibly in her late 20s early 30’s maybe?), a schoolgirl who nearly * trigger warning* harmed herself and a classmate who is being bullied for his love of art。 The little girl has to find out “What is Happiness?” and to be honest personally, it’s a 50/50 question cause everyone is different yknow lol! I really liked the fact the manga does pretty much take you into the little girls young life in finding her own answer。 It was so wholesome yet she experienced a few challenges of her own, especially when it came to her family as well as her school life。 She’s a pretty strong character that you just wanna be her friend man! It was such a nice read on reflecting anyone’s happiness really so if you need a boost, look no further cause this manga got ya! 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Similarly to other people, I figured out the twist of the story very early on。 Although I do believe this might have been intended by the author, but a bit more of an awareness from the main character towards her own "others" would have been thanked。 I'm also glad the author decided to eliminate any sort of magic by using the "it was all a dream" cliche, although it's also。。。 well, the "it was all a dream cliche"。 Not the most inventive story in the world that's for sure。But I don't mind it as I Similarly to other people, I figured out the twist of the story very early on。 Although I do believe this might have been intended by the author, but a bit more of an awareness from the main character towards her own "others" would have been thanked。 I'm also glad the author decided to eliminate any sort of magic by using the "it was all a dream" cliche, although it's also。。。 well, the "it was all a dream cliche"。 Not the most inventive story in the world that's for sure。But I don't mind it as I greatly enjoyed its focus on happiness。 A lot of tragedy and sadness is implied in the lifes of the "others", as is the bittersweet ending, where some sort of trauma is still present in the life of the Main Character, however: it never went beyond that。 It remained focused on happiness and was a heartfelt story of self-discovery as seen through the lenses of a child。 It was also really satisfying to read about the MC, as her "wholesome" outlook in life is bright and charming in equal measures。 It's a surprisingly stoic work though, accepting of death and about the acceptance of circumstances beyond our control, while at the same time encouraging us to work with what we have。 Again, not the most original story。 But sometimes it's fine with stating the obvious, and it is a message that's always reassuring to hear。 。。。more

Very sweet story。 Makes you feel。 Makes you think about things。 “Happiness doesn’t come to you。。。 You have to choose it and reach for it yourself。”

I admit that this Manga took me a while to read, but it was nothing about the story。 It was that I got caught up in too much of my own emotions to let myself finish this。 I am glad I took the time to do so today, and this is definitely something I will reread。 I loved the theme and the magical realism with this one, which I didn't even know a manga could have。 It is definitely one of my favorite reads of the year。 I admit that this Manga took me a while to read, but it was nothing about the story。 It was that I got caught up in too much of my own emotions to let myself finish this。 I am glad I took the time to do so today, and this is definitely something I will reread。 I loved the theme and the magical realism with this one, which I didn't even know a manga could have。 It is definitely one of my favorite reads of the year。 。。。more
